Bernese Mountain Dogs - Breed Information:
Caring for a Berner puppy is a big responsibility. Before choosing this breed please take into consideration the requirements for a Bernese Mountain Dog for its ENTIRE lifetime… and whether this is the right breed for you and your family:
- Average life span is only 7-8 years, primarily due to cancers and hereditary diseases.
- Large breeds don’t mature mentally until 2+ years old – expect puppy behaviors such as chewing & eating inappropriate things for that time. They need greater supervision than some breeds.
- The larger the dog the more expensive the food AND vet bills. Especially quality food - to lessen the vet bills and promote longevity. Also consider the potential longterm costs of things such as ACL repairs and cancer treatments ($1000s) – no matter how hard we try to improve longevity there's never guarantees against these.
- BMDs are very attached to their owners, they want to be WITH the family as much as possible and don't do well left alone for long periods of time.
- Their heavy coat requires considerable grooming and tends to shed throughout the house. Regular brushing will help, and bathing is only required every few months.
